Founded
in 1954, Goonge Beharon Ka Vidhyalaya is committed to the welfare and
development of the hearing and speech disabled students. Run by a highly
motivated and dedicated group of workers, we, with full determination,
impart education and vocational skills to these children so that they can
develop self-confidence, earn a decent livelihood and become productive
citizens.
Though headquartered in Kanpur in an area of 2000 sq. yard, we serve
disabled to corners of the surrounding districts of Kanpur. Our work has
been highly appreciated by general public as well as by the state and union
government. We are registered as a Non Government Organisation (NGO) in
India. In addition to it we are also registered with the Directorate of
Handicapped Welfare Department of U.P. Government under F.C.R.A.
Over five decades, we have improved the productivity of the society by
making the disabled self dependent. We have educated them to be part of the
nation building. We have organised nation wide educational tours, given
industrial training, made them tech and computer savvy, and generated
awareness regarding government fundings and other initiatives for self
employment. We have contributed substantially towards providing employment
and rehabilitation to them.
We have hostel facilities for our distanced students, transportation for
students coming from nearby places, and have arranged railway concession
form and disability certificates by organising government camps in the
school premises.

Goonge
Beharon Ka Vidyalaya or simply GBKV is a testimony to our founder, Mr. Devi
Sharan Mishra's commitment towards the cause of children with disabilities,
particularly deaf and dumb children. Although an ordinary person, Mr. Devi
Sharan Mishra was driven by an extraordinary dream - the dream that no child
with physical disability would be deprived of his/her basic rights like
survival, participation, protection and development.
The foundation of GBKV was laid during the year 1954, when Mr. Devi Sharan
Mishra, son of Mr. Jhaulal Mishra came to Kanpur. He used to teach students
for a living when he came face to face with the deprivation of deaf and dumb
children. Moved by their condition, he took this as a challenge and vowed to
work for them. For this purpose, he took a small room on rent although he
had no regular source of income and even had no financial aid and help from
any quarter.
But that didn't deter him from his mission. He took a 'Tonga' and used it
to bring deaf and dumb children to the school, teach them and then drop them
back home. During the time the same 'Tonga' was the only source of his
living and he faced immense hardship in making both ends meet.
With the never give-up attitude, Mr. Devi Sharan Mishra stands for his
mission for the well-being of deaf and dumb. He sowed the seeds of
inspiration 52 years back and today it has turned into a huge tree which is
serving a large number of deaf and dumb students and has proved to be a
great help for the state.
Today, the organization, having all the basic amenities, provide quality
education, professional training and hostel facility to the students.
As a result of untiring and continuous efforts of Mr. Devi Sharan Mishra,
there are around 450 students at present that are receiving quality
education. The former students of the school have got employment in
government sector like Ordinance, Parachute, Air Force, Railways, Postal
Department, Gun factory, Elmico, Small Arms, Municipal corporation as also
in semi-government and private sector. These students are self- dependent
and are contributing a lot towards their families and society.
Mr. Mishra is a missionary, who believes in working silently, has
contributed a lot to the society. Hence, we urge you to pledge his name for
the President's Award for the outstanding services rendered by him for the
development of physically challenged. children.
We, at GBKV, realize that deaf and dumb
people have the right to choose their own way to live their life. Hence, we
put all our efforts to make these people capable enough to not only stand on
their own and lead a life like any normal person.
In addition, our mission is to instill confidence in them so that they just
can not remain the subjects of sympathy. We also aim to bring them to the
mainstream and contribute towards their family and society at large.
Although, some of our students are settled having their own families, a
lot, still needs to be done. And we continue to be in the service of deaf
and dumb.

In
the past 52 years, the school has witnesses several success stories that was
created due to the sheer efforts of Mr. Devi Sharan Mishra and his associate
staff. From a long period of time in conservative Indian society, it was
felt that deaf and dumb people were incapable of being taught. But, due to
the dedicated efforts of GBKS, these people become grace for the society.
When deaf and dumb people matches their march with the aspirations of Mr.
Devi Sharan Mishra, they have been excelling well not only in the field of
education and profession but also in games and sports and become a source of
inspiration by winning honour for the country.
A student of GBKV, Mohammad Shahabuddin, is studying in the school since
his K.G. class. He had participated in second Deaf Cricket World Cup, 2005.
In a match against England held at K.D. Singh Babu Stadium, Lucknow, his
performance was commendable and India had recorded victory by 79 runs.
This story inspires us determination and hard-working put all the obstacle
aside that come across in the progress of life or become hindrance in
achieving the goal of life. Today, GBKV students are playing an important
role in preserving the proud of nation and in the growth of the country. All
these dreams come true due to the efforts of Mr. Devi Sharan Mishra and Mrs.
Ram Sakhi Mishra.
